A different but still pleasant sound filled the music room, the sound of chairs moving, feet shuffling on the rug, content voices chatting. The musicale had come to a triumphant end. Noah still heard the last few notes ringing in his ears, washing over him. He always felt uplifted by beautiful art and good company. Even Mr. Milburn could not take that from him. Now, if only Noah could steal that long awaited moment with Miss Harcourt.

Just as he turned to her, Mr. Milburn stood from his chair, looking determined to monopolize her attention yet again. Before he could open his mouth, Mr. Harcourt stood as well.

“Mr. Milburn, I would greatly appreciate it if you could join me for a drink. I’ve been eager to discuss the performances with you since I know how fond you are of music.” The gentleman’s brow furrowed for a fraction of a second before graciously accepting Mr. Harcourt’s friendly invitation.

“Miss Harcourt, may I introduce you to my sisters?” Noah quickly offered, determined not to let Mr. Milburn block him again—or to waste Mr. Harcourt’s assistance.

The young woman glanced nervously from Noah to the row where his family sat to Mr. Milburn. Her eyes lingered on the viscount’s son for a moment. “That would be lovely, Mr. Waynford.”

Noah would have rather found a quiet corner to talk, just the two of them, but she seemed in need of rescuing so this would have to do. Besides, he would have to introduce her to his sisters eventually. Perhaps it would be better to get that out of the way sooner rather than later.

Mr. Harcourt stepped out of the way to let them pass, immediately closing the distance between himself and Mr. Milburn once Noah and his sister had made it into the aisle. “Did you have a particular favorite?” Mr. Harcourt asked the gentleman, wasting no time in leading him toward the back of the room.

Noah smiled to himself as he and Miss Harcourt made their way through the crowd of guests who lingered in the aisle. Her brother was quite an observant and thoughtful man. Hopefully, Noah would have a chance to thank him for all his help at some point in the near future.

Emma and Angelica barely waited for introductions before they began to gush about the wonderful entertainment, immediately pulling Miss Harcourt into their little group so they could praise her family for hosting such a lovely evening.

“Miss Harcourt, you must tell me where Lord and Lady Welsted found that amazing string quartet. I’m sure I will hire them if Josias and I ever host a musicale,” Angelica insisted, her eyes glowing with genuine curiosity as well as a desire to make Miss Harcourt feel comfortable.

“I cannot help noticing that you, Lady Welsted, and your sister all wear such lovely gowns,” Emma chimed in, grasping Miss Harcourt’s hands as if they’d been friends for years. “My modiste has recently retired and I’ve found that I just do not like her replacement as much. Would you mind telling me where you ladies have your dresses made? This beading is exquisite.
